For those who have never served in the military, Memorial Day might feel more like a long weekend or a much-needed extra day off than its intended purpose.
Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for the men and women of the U.S. military who have died while serving our country. For veterans and military families, it can be a heavy day, centered on remembering loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could live in freedom.
It’s important to note that Memorial Day is different from Veterans Day. Veterans Day honors all U.S. military veterans, both living and deceased. Memorial Day is specifically set aside to remember those who gave their lives in service.
A few years ago, we hosted a speaker whose son died while serving in the military. She shared a thought that has stayed with me: It’s not appropriate to say, “Happy Memorial Day” because the day is for reflection and gratitude for the price paid by many. And for some, it can be deeply personal and emotional.
As you engage in conversations during the upcoming holiday weekend, here are some phrases you can consider to respectfully honor the day:
Alternatives to “Happy Memorial Day”:
- “Honoring and remembering those who gave everything.”
- “Grateful for the ultimate sacrifice of our heroes.”
- “In memory of those who served and sacrificed.”
- “Today we remember the brave.”
If you’re speaking to someone personally impacted:
- “Thinking of you and your loved one today.”
- “Thank you for your family’s sacrifice.”
At Knowing God Ministries, we are deeply grateful for those who laid down their lives for our freedom. We remember you. And to the families of the fallen, we honor you and thank you. Your sacrifices are not forgotten.
We have lots of studies going on this summer!
