Hospitality Is Not a Pinterest Project
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Powerful
“Practice hospitality.” Romans 12:13
I used to think hospitality was reserved for those who seemed to always have it all
together. And I certainly didn’t see myself as one of them! The thought of having
people in my home completely stressed me out. Hosting felt like a grand production
where everything had to be perfectly orchestrated—from spotless counters to a
Pinterest-worthy table spread. It was overwhelming. After just a few attempts, I gave
up and decided that hospitality simply wasn’t my gift.
But in recent years, God has placed people in my life who model hospitality
beautifully. They do it with grace, ease, and an others-focused heart. Through their
example, my perspective began to shift. I realized I had been looking at hospitality
through the wrong lens. Romans 12:13 tells us to “practice hospitality,” and this isn’t a
suggestion—it’s a command. Below are a few truths that have helped me reframe
my thinking and begin embracing hospitality again:
- Hospitality is not a performance. It’s a mindset that focuses on people, not
perfection. It’s less about pulling off an event and more about creating space
for connection. And it begins right where you are—with the people who live
under your roof. - Hospitality doesn’t require a five-star experience. Keep it simple.
Remember the saying, “less is more”? Sometimes trying to do too much can
actually make guests feel more uncomfortable. Simplicity is welcoming. - Hospitality starts by cultivating a home that refreshes. This doesn’t mean
your home has to be spotless, but it does mean creating an atmosphere
where souls can breathe. A place where people feel safe, loved, and
accepted. Where they look forward to being because it’s filled with peace. - Hospitality includes good food. Let’s be honest—food matters! It nourishes
both body and soul, especially for the men and boys in our lives. A stocked
pantry and a simple plan go a long way in making others feel cared for.
Personally, my faith walk took off because one woman—my neighbor—invited me
into her home. She didn’t impress me with her décor or gourmet meals. Instead, she
loved me with her presence (and coffee!) and discipled me with gentle
encouragement. My neighbor’s desire to open her door changed my life.
I often wonder where I’d be if she hadn’t practiced hospitality with her neighbor.
You never know the impact you might have simply by opening your door. In a world
that’s often cold and unkind, hospitality offers a warm and tangible expression of God’s love. It’s a powerful, personal way to reach someone’s heart—one invitation, one conversation, and one cup of coffee at a time.
