How to Protect Your Loved Ones’ Hearts in a World Pulling Them Away

Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes. Nehemiah 4:14 (NIV)

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the social and cultural influences coming against our families? Do you worry that the world’s values might seep into the hearts of the people you love most?

Nehemiah understood what it meant to face opposition. He was a powerful leader of God’s people, living in Judea after their return from exile in Babylon. God had commissioned him to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. But Nehemiah’s enemies were relentless. They harassed, bullied, and tried to intimidate him and the people into quitting.

Instead of giving in to fear, Nehemiah took a stand. He knew that no matter how overwhelming the enemy seemed, his God was bigger—able to do immeasurably more than he could ask or imagine.

Nehemiah rallied the people with this charge: “Don’t be afraid… Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” (Nehemiah 4:14)

That same call still rings true today. We may not be building a physical wall, but we are called to stand guard over our families’ hearts and minds. One of the most powerful ways to “fight” for them is through prayer.

But how do you start? How do you fight in prayer?

By opening God’s Word and praying it back to Him.

When we don’t know what to say, Scripture gives us the words. Praying His Word aligns our hearts with His will and invites His power into our circumstances. It can move mountains—BIG mountains—in the lives of those we love.

While we can’t control the culture around us, we can pray God’s truth over our children, spouses, friends, and loved ones. And when we pray His Word back to Him, we’re engaging in the most effective spiritual battle plan there is.

If this is new for you, I’ve made it simple. My book Prayer Made Simple offers ready-to-use Scriptures you can pray over the specific needs on your heart. Just turn to the section that matches your concern and begin praying with confidence, knowing God is listening.

Be encouraged—He hears every heartfelt word, even the simplest prayer. And He delights in answering His children.

DO WE REALIZE HOW POWERFUL IT IS TO PRAY GOD’S WORD?

"Is not My word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?" Jeremiah 23:29 (Emphasis mine) When we pray God's Words instead of our own, it's like taking a hammer to rock. When applied over and over, that hammer eventually breaks...
