Living in the Saturday: Finding Hope in the Space Between

“I am He, I am He will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4

The Forgotten Day

Have you ever paused to think about the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter?

It’s the quiet day, the in‑between day, the day Scripture doesn’t say much about. Yet for the disciples, it may have been the most disorienting day of their lives.

When Plan A Collapses

These men had left everything to follow Jesus—careers, families, familiar routines. They put all their eggs in one basket, and in a single devastating moment, that basket shattered.

I often wonder what they did on that Saturday. Did they try to slip back into their old lives? Did they walk the roads back to their hometowns, hoping they still belonged there? Or had their time with Jesus changed them so deeply that returning wasn’t even possible?

I imagine them feeling lost and hopeless, replaying Jesus’ words from the Last Supper, sifting through parables in their minds, searching for meaning. Trying to figure out who they were now and how to live in a world without Him.

Our Own Saturdays

While we weren’t part of that ragtag group of disciples, we’ve lived through our own versions of Saturday.

Most of us have faced moments so life‑altering that the disciples’ grief feels familiar:

  • the loss of someone we love
  • a divorce
  • an empty womb
  • a broken vow
  • a diagnosis
  • the end of a career

Moments that shake us, disorient us, and leave us standing in the rubble of what used to be.

That’s our Saturday—the space between the trauma and the resolution, between the breaking and the healing.

The Christian Clichés We Reach For

When we’re hurting, we often reach for familiar phrases: “This too shall pass.” “God wastes nothing.” “It’s all up to Him.”

And while these statements are true, they don’t always acknowledge the reality of our broken hearts. You can love God deeply and still feel angry, sad, or lost. The key is not to stay there.

Small Steps Toward Hope

So what do we do in our Saturdays?

We take small, intentional steps toward God:

  • Play worship music.
  • Journal.
  • Call a friend.
  • Take a walk.
  • Open your Bible and focus on who God is and how deeply He loves you.

Over time, God smooths the rough places and heals the broken ones.

The Promise That Carries Us

We aren’t promised that every outcome will match our desires. But we are promised that we will never face our Saturdays alone.

God is with us—in the silence, in the confusion, in the waiting.

And just as Sunday came for the disciples, hope will come for us too.
