The Importance of Friends

The Importance of Friends

Luke 1:39

“At that time, Mary got ready and hurried to the town in the hill country of Judea…”

Pregnant by the Holy Spirit…

Scripture does not tell us how or when Mary, the mother of Jesus, shared the news of her with her parents and Joseph.  We’re merely told she “got ready and hurried” to visit her pregnant cousin, Elizabeth.

I wonder why Mary wasted no time in leaving for Elizabeth’s.  Maybe she needed time to process such major news with someone who was older in the faith.  After all, Elizabeth had experienced the supernatural hand of God in her circumstances as well.

Or maybe Mary desperately needed to talk to someone who spoke her faith language.   Someone who would not doubt her very hard to believe story.  And someone who would affirm her calling, which Elizabeth did the moment Mary walked through the door!

Elizabeth’s confirmation (without Mary sharing a word) must have been like refreshing cold water on a hot, summer day.

It’s so important to have friends who speak your faith language.  Friends who are at a similar place in their walk with the Lord as you are.  Friends who can encourage you when down. Someone who gently holds you accountable.

Notice the Bible doesn’t indicate that Mary had multiple friends she turned to – just one.  Elizabeth.  One is all that’s needed.

Do you have friends like this?  A friend with whom you can be transparent and authentic.  If not, ask God to give you an Elizabeth.  True friendships like this are a treasure.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…
