My niece, Ashton!

My beautiful nieces graduated last week.  The mere sound of the graduation march puts an immediate knot in my throat and tears in my eyes.  You see, next week my first-born graduates.

I’ve been struggling with gift ideas.  A friend of mine gave Will (my son) a great gift – gift cards and a David Jeremiah devotional.  It’s practical yet has a meaningful/eternal element.

Her gift got me thinking, what do you give to graduates?  For boys or girls?   To your own children, family members, or children of your friends and coworkers?

I put the question on Facebook and Instagram and what an outpouring of GREAT ideas followed!  I love the KGM community and am appreciative of all the suggestions.  Maybe these gift ideas that I received will encourage all of us with graduates in our lives – whether this year or the coming ones ahead:

  1. Quilt made out of his/her t-shirts.
  2. Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” personalizing each page with scripture, quotes and sayings and a letter to the graduate on the back page.
  3. For girls, an engravable necklace or bracelet with the GPS coordinates for home engraved or a favorite family saying.  For boys, nice luggage with their name and toiletries bag… you can get the bag engraved with similar home coordinates.
  4. A trip to go with that luggage.
  5. Nice piece of jewelry or charm bracelet.
  6. Big laundry basket loaded with dorm essentials.
  7. Something with sentimental value instead of something very expensive. Graduates might appreciate it more than you might think and remember for a lifetime.
  8. Small travel safes to keep all their belongings while in college.
  9. Passport and passport case.
  10. Journal that maybe you start writing in years before.
  11. Sterling silver cross that can double as a book mark – engraved with name and graduation date.
  12. Watch – especially following a college graduation!
