“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” – Song of Songs 2:15

In this verse from Song of Songs, the vineyard represents a beautiful relationship between a man and woman whose love is tender, deepening, and blossoming.

Yet the foxes, who symbolize Satan, threaten to destroy their special bond.

This verse speaks directly to our marriages. When a man and woman enter the marriage covenant, they declare “before God” their commitment to one another. They become one.

Of course, the enemy seeks to undermine anything God has instituted because it is holy and sacred. So, he constantly seeks ways to divide the marriage relationship.

Satan is described as subtle and crafty. He doesn’t always operate through GRAND destruction. The more subtle an attack the better, because there is a greater chance to catch you off guard.

But the lovers in Song of Songs understand potential threats to their relationship exist.

Rather than ignore the possibility, they are on alert, not neglecting their “vineyard” (romance/relationship) nor leaving it unprotected.

They are on guard against any little thing that could cause problems. As we know, it’s often the little things that challenge and destroy relationships.

Are you alert to little foxes?

Those sly rascals can sneak in at the beginning of a budding romance and/or later on down the road years into marriage. Regularly tend your vineyard so that it can be fruitful, full of joy and pleasure, and thriving.

When you find a little fox, commit to to doing the hard work to work through the challenge together. Resist the temptation to allow it to run free – the health of your vineyard depends on it!
