“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15)
By: Melissa Bell
Life can be painfully difficult. As Christians, we’re not surprised—Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
So how do we respond when someone we love is suffering?
When someone is grieving, they’re often just trying to survive the day. They may not have the energy to answer questions or explain what they’re going through. But we can still show up. Here’s how:
- Send a Simple Message
A short note or text like “I’m rooting for you” can mean the world. It acknowledges their pain and reminds them they’re not alone.
- Don’t Ask—Just Act
Instead of asking, “Can I bring you something?” say, “I’m dropping off a meal—what time works?” A small act of kindness, done quietly, speaks volumes.
- Keep Reaching Out
Even if your messages go unanswered, keep sending them. Invitations and check-ins may not be acknowledged now, but they’ll be remembered later.
Grief looks different for everyone. But presence—quiet, steady, and sincere—always matters.
