The Silent Epidemic: Mental Health and Anxiety

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

In recent years, mental health has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges in the United States. Anxiety disorders stand out as the most common mental health condition, affecting an estimated 40 million adults annually.

The Bible shows us that mental health is not just a modern concern but a timeless aspect of the human experience.

David battled depression and his cries for help can be seen throughout the Psalms. In moments of darkness, he turned to prayer and worship, inviting divine presence into his pain.

Elijah was overwhelmed with fear, loneliness, and burnout causing him to retreat into the wilderness in despair. God responded to Elijah’s pleas by sending an angel to provide nourishment and rest. A great reminder for us that selfcare is vital.

Job endured unimaginable grief, loss, and emotional anguish. Yet Job’s story exemplifies how faith can coexist with suffering; reminding us that lament is not a sign of weakness but rather a crucial part of our healing journey.

As Christians, we are invited to come boldly before God—bringing our brokenness, questions, and sorrows to His throne of grace. In exchange, He offers comfort and a peace that surpasses all understanding.

If you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or discouraged, know this: you are not alone. The Bible is filled with stories of people who struggled emotionally and spiritually—yet found healing and hope in God.

Healing is possible. Hope is real. And in Jesus Christ, you are deeply loved and never forgotten.
