Why “Writing it Down” is Important

Exodus 17:14,  Then the Lord said to Moses,
“Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered…”

Just as writing a “to-do list” helps us remember what’s important, God tells us multiple times in Scripture to,  “Write it down.”

One of the first recorded instances of “writing it down” or journaling was when Israel defeated the Amalekites.   In Exodus 17:14,  the Lord says to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered…”

Isaiah 30:8, “Go now, write it on a tablet…”   Revelation 1:11, Jesus commands John to “write what you see on a scroll.”   These are just to name a few.

When I first began having a quiet time, I would sit, read… say a little prayer and then was on my way.

A year or two later, I grew into the next phase of my quiet time: I acquired a highlighter!  I thought I was quite the student as I would highlight whatever jumped off the page in whatever devotional or book I was reading.

However, when I began coupling the highlighter with a journal, spiritual growth began.

I believe journaling is essential to a believer’s spiritual growth.  Journaling helps us:

  • Remember what God has spoken to us through His Word, especially when our circumstances contradict His promises.  (And they often will!)
  • Reminds us of God’s faithfulness through answered prayers.
  • Gives us an opportunity to pass our faith to the next generation!

The Lord is willing to direct and guide us, but if we fail to write down His Words of promise or reassurance or direction, we can easily forget what HE deems important to our everyday lives.

With that said… the way I journal is most likely very different from the way you or other women journal.  But here’s the really cool part:  there’s no right or wrong way to journal. We should journal in a way that works for us individually.  The important thing, is to “write it down.”

To some women, journaling can seem overwhelming.  It can seem long and laborious.  But it’s not nor does it have to be!

At our last team meeting,  a lively discussion sparked on the subject of journaling and the importance of it in a believer’s walk with Jesus.  So at the luncheon workshop Friday,  we decided it may be helpful for you to hear from three different women –  three different ways of journaling.  You’ll hear from Melody, Ellen and myself.

(By the way, Ellen and Melody are spiritual giants in my world.   They have been with KGM since inception in 2007.  They are two of KGM’s greatest prayer warriors. I personally learn so much from their walk with God.  They are both gifts to me from Jesus.)

Each of us journal differently.  During the workshop we’ll explain each of our ways of journaling and avail ourselves to your questions.  You’ll leave with tools and jewels of wisdom that will help you grow in your daily walk with God!
