What does it really mean to seek God?
How do you spend time with someone you can’t see?
For a long time, I didn’t know how to answer these questions. I wanted to spend time with God but didn’t know where to start. Over the years, however, I’ve discovered a few practical steps that helped me—and I hope they’ll help you, too. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to deepen your time with Him, these simple practices can guide you in drawing closer to God.
- Choose a Place in Your Home
Jesus had a specific, solitary place where He went to pray (see Luke 11:1; Mark 1:35). Others in Scripture did the same:
- Abraham built an altar
- Moses met with God in the Tent of Meeting
- Daniel prayed in an upper room
- Habakkuk climbed up on the ramparts
Find a quiet, dedicated spot in your home where you can meet with God. For me, it’s my sitting room. I’ve made it my own space—a place I love to be. Personalize your spot and keep it as free from distractions as possible.
- Choose a Time of Day
Pick a time that works best for your schedule—and try to stick with it. For me, mornings are ideal. My mind is still, undistracted by the noise of the day.
Scripture affirms the power of morning prayer:
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place.” — Mark 1:35
“He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.” — Isaiah 50:4
- Put Your Devices Away
While Bible apps are helpful, they can also become a source of distraction. Social media notifications, news alerts, and emails can easily pull your focus.
There’s something sacred about opening your physical Bible, placing it on your lap, and meeting with God—device-free. Let that be your starting place each day.
- Start with Prayer
Begin your time by talking to God.
Praise Him for who He is. Thank Him for your blessings. Invite Him to guide your thoughts and open your heart. Ask for His mind, His wisdom, and His voice as you spend time in His presence.
- Have a Plan
Spending time with God is more fruitful when you have a plan.
If you’re new to reading the Bible, start with a devotional—but always read the Scripture referenced. Don’t just skim a verse. Look it up and read the surrounding context. God often speaks in the verses before and after!
- Internalize What You Read
Don’t just read—reflect.
Ask yourself:
- What am I learning about God?
- Is God teaching me something new?
- Is He comforting, convicting, or giving me perspective?
Write down what you sense He’s saying. I keep a journal where I record these thoughts. It helps me remember and revisit what He’s taught me.
- Choose to Obey
Spending time with God isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s about transformation. Apply what He teaches you. Live it out.
And if God encourages you with a truth, don’t keep it to yourself. Share it with someone. You never know who else may need that same word of hope.
“Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror, and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” — James 1:22–24
Spending time with God doesn’t have to be complicated. It starts with a heart that’s willing and a few simple steps that build a daily rhythm of meeting with Him.
He’s waiting for you—ready to speak, to lead, and to fill your heart with His presence.
