Did You Know? A Forgotten Part of America’s Story

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to take a Spiritual Heritage Tour of the U.S.
Capitol, and I’ve never forgotten it. The experience left a lasting impression on me.

Did you know…

  • Church services were once held inside the U.S. Capitol. (I found that especially
    endearing!)
  • Many of the ideas found in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution
    were influenced by biblical principles.
  • America’s founders, while imperfect, had a deep reverence for God and His
    Word.
  • Many of them regularly sought God’s guidance through prayer.
  • They recognized God’s hand in the founding of our nation.

Standing in the Capitol Rotunda and listening to the stories of our nation’s founding, my
heart swelled with gratitude. More than anything, I left with renewed hope that our
nation can experience spiritual renewal when God’s people turn back to Him.

As we celebrate Independence Day, let’s do more than enjoy fireworks and family
gatherings. Let’s pray for our country.

Let’s thank God for:

  • The freedoms we enjoy.
  • The many ways He has blessed our nation. (Our country is absolutely beautiful!)

The Bible urges believers to offer “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and
thanksgivings” for all people, especially for “kings and all who are in authority” so that
we may live peaceful and godly lives. Paul explains that this is “good and acceptable
in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth.”(1 Timothy 2:1–4 emphasis mine).

Let’s remember that our hope is not in politics, policies, or people. Our hope is in God
alone. He is the “great King over all the earth” (Psalm 47:2).

Let’s also pray for:

  • Spiritual awakening among God’s people.
  • Repentance and a return to God’s truth.
  • Wisdom to discern good from evil.
  • Courageous believers who fear God above all else.
  • A renewed hunger for God’s Word.
  • Christ to be made known throughout our nation.
  • Mercy for all the evil we’ve tolerated or ignored.
  • Our leaders to fear God more than man.

As we celebrate our nation’s freedom, may we remember the One from whom every
good gift comes. May we be faithful to pray, grateful for His many blessings, and
committed to living for Jesus in our corners of the world.

A Simple Way to Deepen Your Prayer Life

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise." Psalm 100:4 When we come to God in prayer, it’s so natural to lead with our needs. The burdens feel urgent. The situations feel heavy. But I’ve learned that one of the most powerful ways to begin is not...
