When life feels confusing, painful, or uncertain, most of us want the same thing: we
want to hear from God. We want His wisdom for decisions, relationships, parenting,
ministry, work, and everyday life. We don’t want to be led only by emotions or
circumstances — we want His direction.
Jesus said, “His sheep follow Him because they know His voice” (John 10:4). God still
speaks to His people, and learning to recognize His voice is essential for walking
closely with Him.
I often think about airplanes landing at night. Pilots depend on runway lights to guide
them safely to the ground. In the same way, God gives us “runway lights” to guide us
through life. The first and most important runway light is His Word — the Bible.
Runway Light #1: God’s Written Word
God primarily speaks through Scripture. As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit brings
understanding, wisdom, conviction, comfort, and direction.
Have you ever had a verse suddenly feel personal — almost as if God was speaking
directly into your situation? That’s one way He guides us. His Word gives us His
perspective on our circumstances.
Too often, we make decisions based only on what feels logical, easy, or comfortable.
But God sees what we cannot see. We need His direction more than we need favorable
circumstances.
Years ago, I was deciding whether to recommit to leading a Bible study. Honestly, the
timing seemed perfect. My children were older, life was easier, and it made complete
sense to continue.
But one morning during my quiet time, I read these words:
“You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Break camp and advance.” —
Deuteronomy 1:6
The message was unmistakable. God was leading me in a different direction — one that
eventually opened the door to speaking and writing ministry. Had I only followed my
circumstances, I would have missed His plan.
Don’t Rush Through God’s Word
Sometimes we approach Bible reading like a checklist. But God isn’t asking how many
chapters we read — He wants transformation.
There are days when one verse is enough. Slow down. Pray before you read. Ask God
to speak. Expect Him to.
A simple way to study Scripture is to ask:
1. What is this passage saying?
2. What is God teaching me?
3. How can I apply this today?
God’s Word becomes personal when we pause long enough to listen.
And when He speaks — write it down. We forget so quickly. Journaling helps us
remember His faithfulness and guidance.
God is real, personal, and present in the details of everyday life. He still speaks. The
question is: are we willing to slow down enough to listen?
Part 2 coming soon.
