“Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it…” — Proverbs 16:22
Discretion is the ability to make wise, careful judgments about what to do or say,
especially in situations that require sensitivity, prudence, and self-control.
I have a friend who is a master at discretion. She always seems to know when to share
and when not to share. And when she does speak, she knows exactly how much to say without saying too much. She truly is a life-giving fountain to everyone around her.
I wish I could say the same about myself.
Too often, my emotions get in the way. Or maybe I convince myself that if I don’t say
what I’m thinking, I’ll burst. Whatever the reason, discretion is an area where I want to
grow.
In a world that encourages us to share every thought, voice every opinion, and react to
every situation, Scripture calls us to something different: discretion.
Biblical discretion is wisdom in action. It’s knowing when to speak, when to remain silent, what to share, and what to entrust to God. Discretion protects relationships, guards our witness, and helps us respond with grace rather than emotion.
“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” — Proverbs 2:11
Lately, I’ve been training myself to pause before speaking, posting, or reacting and ask
a few simple questions:
• Is it true?
• Is it necessary?
• Is it kind?
• Does it honor Jesus?
Discretion is wisdom guided by the Holy Spirit. And according to Proverbs, it becomes a life-giving fountain—not only for us, but for everyone around us.
